Acknowledged as the pioneer of the labor movement, Recabarren was instrumental in establishing the initial workers’ unions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this period, following the aftermath of the Pacific War, industrial capitalism flourished in Chile, particularly in mining, factories, and port operations, ushering in a new era of economic and labor dynamics.

It was against this backdrop that Recabarren (July 6, 1876 – December 19, 1924), a skilled typographer, took on the mission of organizing workers to advocate for their rights and establish a press dedicated to labor issues.
Starting from 1901 in Iquique, located in the north of Chile, he played a pivotal role in founding grassroots associations to foster the growth of labor unions and advocated for women’s empowerment.
In 1912, alongside fellow leaders, he established the Socialist Workers’ Party, the first political entity exclusively devoted to championing the interests of the labor force. A decade later, this group evolved into the present-day Communist Party of Chile.
José Emilio Recabarren served as a member of parliament, led the Chilean Workers’ Federation from 1917 to 1921, and represented Chile as the sole delegate at the Congress of Trade Unions in Moscow at the end of 1922.
In May 1924, shortly before his passing, the publication El Despertar de los Trabajadores ceased publication, to be succeeded by the newspaper La Justicia. These events reflect the enduring impact of Recabarren on the labor movement.
