City of Columbia officials recently engaged in discussions with a ⁢delegation from the Republic of Ghana to strengthen the existing sisterly‌ relations between Ghana and South Carolina. The delegation’s visit aimed to explore potential ​areas of collaboration in trade, investments, culture, tourism, and education⁢ during their three-day ⁤stay in Columbia.

Welcoming ⁤the Ghanaian delegation at City Hall, Mayor Daniel Rickenmann⁣ expressed his gratitude⁢ for the visit, emphasizing the importance of fortifying ties between the two regions, ‍especially through the sister city partnership⁢ with Accra. He highlighted‍ the city’s ‌commitment to seeking opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration that benefit both Columbia ⁢and Ghana.

The delegation from Ghana, led by Her Excellency Alima Mahama ‍(Hajia), the ambassador of the Republic ⁤of Ghana to⁣ the United States, included Mrs. Ninette Danquah Ivo,⁣ Minister of‍ Economic and Diaspora Affairs, and ⁣Mr. Job Tiimob, Trade Officer at the Embassy of Ghana. Ambassador Mahama, ​the first female ‌ambassador to the​ United States,​ assumed office in June 2021.

Councilman Tyler D. Bailey acknowledged the historical​ ties between Columbia and Accra, with‌ a ⁤significant portion⁢ of the city’s African American population tracing their roots to West Africa. He underscored the deep connections ‍shared⁢ between the two cities and the progress achieved through their sister city relationship since its establishment in​ 2011. Bailey expressed optimism about furthering collaboration and exploring new avenues for development and‌ growth.

Discussions‍ between city officials and the Ghanaian⁣ delegation ‌encompassed various topics, including the sister city relationship ​with⁤ Accra, infrastructural advancements, and ‍educational and ⁢cultural initiatives such as a potential urban development project. City Manager Teresa Wilson emphasized the value of collaboration with Ambassador Mahama,​ underscoring the mutual benefits of working together towards common goals.

The relationship between ​the City of Columbia and Ghana⁢ flourished in 2011 when Accra was designated as a ​sister​ city to ⁤Columbia. The Columbia World‌ Affairs Council and ⁤Benedict College play ​integral roles in ⁣maintaining and fostering ongoing relations between the two cities.

In 2014, delegations from ‌both cities exchanged visits to ⁤discuss areas of mutual interest such as⁢ water/sewer infrastructure, housing, and business opportunities. Subsequently, in 2022, a delegation from Accra, including Mayor Elizabeth Sackey and former Mayor Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, visited Columbia to continue discussions on public infrastructure and other key areas.

The​ City of Columbia remains dedicated ‍to nurturing its partnership with Ghana, building on past successes, ‍and exploring new avenues for collaboration and‍ growth.
