Isabel, a ⁣well-respected international communist, anthropologist, and educator, dedicated a significant portion of ‍her life to China, cultivating a special bond with Bishan.‍ During his recent visit, iChongqing had the opportunity to⁤ sit down with Michael in Bishan and ⁤discuss his ‍mother’s impactful legacy.

Back in ⁢1940, Isabel embarked on a rural ⁢development project in Xinglong ‌Chang ⁤(now known as Daxing Town in Bishan), where she visited around 1,500 households and meticulously documented the lives of the villagers. Her detailed records have since become invaluable historical treasures. In recognition ⁣of her unwavering commitment, in 2019, Isabel was bestowed with China’s highest honor for‍ foreign nationals, the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China, and was also granted the title of “Honorary Citizen of ⁤Bishan District, Chongqing.” Isabel’s‌ life became intricately⁤ woven into the fabric of Chinese society, leaving behind​ a heartwarming and enduring legacy of genuine connections.

During the ‌interview, Michael Crook expressed, ⁣”I came here not only to retrace my mother’s footsteps but also to witness the remarkable transformations taking ⁣place ‍in‌ rural China.” Through Michael’s eyes, ‌we gain a deeper understanding⁣ of the profound impact Isabel had on China, particularly ⁢in Bishan, where her spirit continues to resonate deeply within the hearts of the‍ Chinese people.
