Vietnamese Students Excel at 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad
The Ministry of Education and Training recently announced that the Vietnamese student team at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in the UK achieved outstanding results. The competition, held in Bath from July 11 to 22, saw the participation of 609 contestants from 108 countries and territories.
the Vietnamese team secured five medals: two silvers and three bronzes, in addition to an honorable mention. Tran Duy, a 12th grader at the High School for Gifted Students in Hanoi, and Tran Minh Hoang, an 11th-grade student from Ha Tinh Province, received the silver medals. The bronzes were awarded to Pham Tran Minh Duc from Hai Phong City, Nguyen Dang Dung from Hanoi, and Nguyen Van Hoang from Bac Ninh Province. Meanwhile, Ta Duc Anh, also from Hanoi, received an honorable mention.
Vietnam ranked 33rd out of all participating countries and territories with a total score of 118 points at the 2024 IMO, a decline of 27 places from the previous year. According to VTC News, the competition consisted of two exams over consecutive days, with each exam lasting 4.5 hours and covering three math problems. Contestants are aged between 14-18 years old, and each problem is worth seven points, with a maximum total score of 42 points. This year, the minimum score requirements for medals were 29 points for gold, 22 points for silver, and 16 points for bronze. Contestants who score seven points on at least one problem but do not win a medal receive an honorable mention.
The award ceremony is set to take place on July 21 in the UK. In the previous year’s competition in Japan, the Vietnamese team performed even better, earning two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes. Vietnam has been participating in the IMO since 1974, with the event being held annually since 1959.
