The recent discovery made by Bahraini ⁣and British archaeologists reveals what is believed to be the earliest Christian structure in the Arabian Gulf, dating back to the fourth century.

Unearthing⁣ History

Located in Samahij,⁣ within Bahrain’s city‌ of Muharraq, this archaeological find ⁢is considered ⁢to ⁢be the first tangible evidence of this‌ ancient Christian ⁣community, shedding new light on the region’s religious history.

During the mid-4th to mid-8th centuries CE,‌ the ‍site was occupied and later abandoned as Islam‍ began to spread among the local population.

Excavation Details

The ⁢excavation process began at ‌a mound within the Samahij cemetery, where remnants of ⁤a mosque were⁤ initially discovered. Deeper digging ‌unveiled a large building with multiple rooms, such as a kitchen, dining area, workshop, and living quarters,⁤ pointing towards the possible residence of the local bishop.

Historical records refer to the‌ area as “Mishmahig” or “Mashmahig,” with hints⁣ of a close link between local authorities and the central church.

Notable artifacts found at the site include plaster ‍crosses, wall⁤ carvings of ⁢symbolic figures, and evidence of trade activities ‍with India through the discovery of semi-precious beads ‍and Indian pottery.

Significant Findings

The project, a joint effort between⁢ the Bahrain Authority for ‍Culture and Antiquities‍ and a British team led by Prof. Timothy Insoll and Dr. Salman Al-Mahari, has revealed crucial⁣ insights into the Christian presence in the region.

These discoveries highlight the⁤ intricate details of daily life within the building, including the types of food consumed, trade activities, and possible cloth production for religious purposes.

The researchers emphasize the importance of preserving this historical site and its ⁣archaeological significance, providing ⁣a fascinating⁤ glimpse ⁤into the past and how people lived, worked, and worshiped in ancient Bahrain.

Ultimately, this groundbreaking find not only adds to our understanding of the region’s history but also showcases the enduring legacy of the Nestorian Church in Bahrain.
