Cardinal Stephen Chow recently made ⁢a significant visit to ⁤three Catholic dioceses in mainland China, following the bishop of Hong Kong’s historic trip to Beijing a year earlier.

Chow, accompanied by a ‍group of 10 Catholics from Hong Kong, journeyed to the cities of Guangzhou, Shantou, and Shenzhen in April, marking his second official visit‍ to China since assuming⁣ the role of⁢ bishop in Hong Kong.

In ⁣a video interview‌ released on⁤ May 5, Chow expressed, “We brought our people together to discuss common topics such as youth ministry, catechism, marriage, and family during this encounter.”

St.⁤ Joseph’s Cathedral in Shantou welcomed hundreds of Chinese Catholics to a Mass presided⁤ over⁣ by Chow and Bishop Huang Bingzhang of Shantou on April 24, as reported by the Sunday Examiner,⁣ a publication ⁣of the⁣ Diocese of Hong Kong.

Huang, among ‍the seven bishops appointed by the Chinese government, had⁢ previously been excommunicated by Pope Francis but reinstated‍ following the Vatican’s provisional agreement with ‌China in 2018.

The elderly underground bishop of Shantou, loyal‌ to the Vatican, was replaced by‌ Huang, prompting controversy and appeals to the pope on his behalf, including one from Cardinal Joseph Zen in Rome.

During their visit, the Hong⁤ Kong delegation toured ‌the construction site of ⁤a new⁢ residence ⁣for the bishop in Shantou, a city known for⁣ its toy manufacturing industry.

Shantou, located in eastern Guangdong Province, boasts‌ a population of approximately 4.6 million people and is recognized for its toy manufacturing sector.

Chow’s journey began in Guangzhou, a bustling port city situated about 75 miles northwest of Hong Kong and home to ⁤over ⁣15 million ⁤residents. The iconic Sacred Heart Cathedral, ‌built predominantly from granite in a Gothic style⁢ by ‌French missionaries between 1861 and 1888, stands proudly on the banks⁤ of the Pearl River with historical support‌ from⁣ Napoleon ⁤III.

Metropolitan Archbishop Joseph Gan Junqiu⁢ of⁢ Guangzhou was appointed by the ‍pope and consecrated in the‌ cathedral ⁢with the Vatican’s support ‍in 2007 despite attempts by Chinese authorities ‍to obstruct the process.‍ Gan revealed that the archdiocese recorded an average of ⁢around ‌100 baptisms per year at the time.

Welcoming the Hong ⁣Kong delegation to the Sacred Heart ⁢Cathedral on April 23, Gan and the delegation celebrated Mass together. Father Joseph ⁢Yim Tak-lung, the chief executive of Caritas Hong Kong, ‍also delivered‌ a presentation about the ministry at the cathedral.

Commemorating the 1911 Revolution ‌at Huanghuagang Mausoleum

Following Mass,‌ the Hong Kong delegation visited ‌the Huanghuagang Mausoleum⁣ in Guangzhou, dedicated to the ‌72 revolutionaries who lost their ⁤lives in the Guangzhou ⁤uprising ‌against the Qing dynasty on April 27, 1911. This revolution⁣ marked the end ‌of China’s imperial rule and paved the way for the ‌establishment of the Republic of China under the leadership of Sun Yat-sen, a prominent figure known as the father of modern China.

The Huanghuagang Mausoleum is notable ⁤for its ‍small replica of the Statue of Liberty in New York, symbolizing the spirit of freedom and revolution. This‍ replica, which was initially‌ removed during China’s Cultural Revolution, was reinstated in the monument ‍in 1981.

Religious Diversity in Shenzhen: St. Anthony’s ‌Church

Shenzhen, a bustling metropolis⁢ with a‍ population exceeding 17 million, is renowned as a global manufacturing hub known ⁣as ⁣”the‍ world’s factory.” The city, situated north of Hong Kong, experienced rapid‍ growth in the last few decades, particularly‌ as⁢ a⁣ special economic zone. ‍According to Inc., Shenzhen was responsible for producing 90% of the world’s electronics ‌in⁣ 2015.

The Catholic ⁢community⁢ in Shenzhen encompasses a ⁢significant number of migrant workers who migrated from ⁣rural parts of China and beyond to work in its industrial sector. St. Anthony’s Catholic Church,‌ established between 1998 and 2001, initially stood ‍as the sole Catholic parish in Shenzhen, catering to ⁢foreign Catholics who either work or visit the city⁢ for business purposes.

Promoting⁤ Cooperation‌ at Christ the King Church

The ⁤foundation for Christ the ‌King Church ‍in ⁢Shenzhen’s Bao’an district⁢ was laid⁣ in 2007, and the church⁢ was completed in ⁢November 2010. During the visit to this ‌church, discussions transpired regarding the potential for collaboration between Chinese Church authorities and ‍the Diocese of Hong Kong through a catechetical formation center in⁢ China. Noteworthy ⁤attendees at this meeting included Connie Chung To-hing, the director of Hong Kong’s‌ diocesan catechetical center, alongside members of the Hong‍ Kong delegation:‍ Father⁤ Peter Choy Wai-man, Father Paul Kam Po-wai, and Father Joseph Chan Wing-chiu.

Moreover, Deacon Gabriel Lau Nam-shan, ⁢Father Wong Ka Chun, and Sherman Cheng Ching-man accompanied the cardinal on this journey. In a video shared⁢ by the diocese, Bishop Joseph Ha Chi-shing, the auxiliary bishop of Hong Kong,‌ emphasized that fostering “friendship” ⁣forms the core of such trips.

Chow‌ humorously remarked⁤ that‍ everyone in the delegation gained a few pounds due to the numerous⁤ meals shared with their new acquaintances, highlighting the genuine bond forged during ‌the visit.

The recent visit‍ of the bishop ⁣of Hong Kong has stirred discussions within the Catholic community. Cardinal ‍Stephen⁢ highlighted the challenges faced by the‌ Church⁢ in Guangdong under communist rule, ‌drawing parallels ‌to the⁤ Church⁣ in Vietnam. Despite these obstacles, both churches have managed to thrive and‍ continue their evangelization efforts in innovative ways.

In a report by the Hong Kong Diocese’s Sunday Examiner, ⁣Cardinal Stephen’s remarks were summarized. He emphasized the resilience and adaptability ‍of the⁤ Church in‌ Guangdong, noting its similarities to the Church in Vietnam. This comparison sheds light on the common struggles faced by Catholic communities under communist ⁣or socialist ⁢regimes.
