The East African Court of Justice Holds Proceedings‌ in Congo vs Rwanda Case

On Thursday, the East⁢ African regional court opened proceedings in a case brought forth by Congo against its neighbor, Rwanda. The lawsuit⁢ accuses Rwanda of⁤ violating Congo’s sovereignty and territorial integrity by⁢ providing military support to rebels in the eastern part ‍of the country. Eastern⁤ Congo has been plagued by armed violence, with numerous armed groups vying for power, land, and valuable mineral resources. Additionally, some of these groups have been implicated in mass killings.

Congo ⁤alleges that Rwandan forces have committed acts of aggression and war crimes in the eastern region. According⁣ to U.N. experts, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 Rwandan government forces are deployed alongside the M23 rebel group in ⁣eastern Congo.

The East African Court‍ of Justice is based in Arusha, Tanzania ⁤and was established under a⁣ 1999 treaty⁤ among several East African nations. Although originally ⁣meant⁢ to hear cases from specific ⁢member countries – Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda,
Uganda and Tanzania – it is now hearing this case between ‌Congo and Rwanda.

The lawsuit comes following President Felix⁣ Tshisekedi’s call for sanctions against Rwanda at the U.N General Assembly over its alleged support for M23 rebels.

In this legal action against Rwanda,
Congo aims ⁢to hold its neighbor accountable for atrocities committed against civilians while seeking reparations for victims as well‌ as raising breaches of international law.Congo’s ⁣lawyer Elisha Ongoya expressed satisfaction ⁢at the progress made on this ‍case.

Rwanda objected⁢ to the court’s jurisdiction over criminal matters related to this case,
arguing that it should be dismissed.

Q:⁢ How has the leaked United Nations report impacted the situation?
