Hutchinson Residents to Represent Minnesota at Shanghai Parade

This September, Shanghai, ‍China will welcome three participants from Hutchinson as special attendees ⁢for a significant cultural ‌event.

The ⁣trio hails from ⁢the ‌Govenaires Drum and Bugle ⁣Corps—a competitive marching band established ‍in St. ⁢Peter back in 1927. This organization ⁤not only embodies music education but also fosters ‌an impressive standard of performance among its members.

An ⁤Exciting Possibility

Kate Falvey,‌ the managing director of the Govenaires, revealed that ⁢she received an invitation from the Shanghai Tourism Festival ⁤Committee last November. A German ⁤teacher at Hutchinson High School, she brought this opportunity to her board of directors‍ and they unanimously agreed to participate. The committee requested a video showcasing their previous ⁣year’s performance ‍when they clinched the Class A championship title with ⁣Drum‍ Corps Associates.

A Legacy ‍of Excellence

The‍ recent win marked their fourth consecutive year achieving this title through Drum Corps Associates—the pinnacle ‍organization for all-age⁤ competitive ‌drum ‍and bugle corps across North America.

Members Ready for Adventure

While not every member can attend this ‌international journey, two talented students from Hutchinson will join Falvey on this exciting trip.

Jackson Bush is preparing to enter his junior year and plays baritone in the Govenaires while also participating on ‍tuba in his high school’s ‍Concert Band. He credits Falvey for introducing him to their exceptional program.

“Ms. Falvey was my German ⁤instructor,” he shared. ”During one of our conversations‌ about marching band, she pointed me towards the Govenaires. It’s been a phenomenal⁢ experience—I’ve‌ encountered things I ⁣never anticipated and learned so much over a short time.”

Pursuing Growth Through Music

Seniors such⁣ as Bradee‌ Isbell are equally⁤ eager; she ⁢plays vibraphone within the group’s front line ensemble. She recalls her initial exposure: “Falvey presented during our band class—another presentation years prior had piqued my interest then too—so I thought now is my moment.” Isbell also balances ⁢playing with her high school Concert Band but will switch gears during travel by⁤ performing with a bass drum alongside her peers⁣ in China.

“When I joined Govies, it ‍was my first time marching on vibraphone after only⁤ playing it previously with my school band,” noted Isbell.⁢ “The ⁤differences were stark—it has pushed me technically as then thanks to lessons learned elsewhere⁢ like ⁤Phoenix ⁢Drumline.”

A Lifelong Connection

Falvey’s journey with the group extends back much ⁢further; originally‍ joining as part of colour guard in 1993, she’s marched with Colts Drum ⁢Corps in⁢ Iowa and has taught various other groups throughout Wisconsin over that‍ span.

“Govies ⁢feel like family,” she expressed warmly; “many have known ⁤each other for decades.”‌ All three individuals emphasized similar sentiments regarding‌ camaraderie within their ranks—a support ⁤system encouraging both personal growth and artistic development.

The Power of⁤ Community Spirit

“Being ⁢part of this ‌front line makes every rehearsal meaningful,” Isbell mentioned enthusiastically; “we often reminisce or simply chat amongst ourselves‍ making those collective ‌memories ever more vibrant.”

This ⁢familial bond enabled them to fulfill participation criteria despite some absences due‍ logistical challenges—attracting alumni alongside ⁢existing members filled⁢ available slots seamlessly!

The voyage begins on ⁣September 7th followed by arrivals slated next day while engaging culturally via activities such as authentic tea ceremonies!

An Unforgettable event Awaits

“On September 10th marks our Grand Parade performance,” detailed Falvey adding anticipation noting attendance reaching upwards past 200k viewers broadcasted globally.

This showcases unique opportunities representing Minnesota expertly parallelled by prior⁣ US teams‌ e.g., UCLA Spirit Squad’s attendance but distinctly note hopefully being first-ever drum corp showcased ‍along parade route accessible thereafter continuing providing smaller engagements‍ throughout locality post-event!” exclaimed excitement burgeoning among group anticipating validating ⁤success beyond standard expectations.
