2023 Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance award Nominees Announced
On Wednesday afternoon, the nominees for the 33rd Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Award were revealed, showcasing a wealth of talent in the realm of live theater.
A Record Number of Participants
This yearS competition features an impressive pool of 40 actors who have made it to the final selection. The winners will be unveiled during a prestigious ceremony at Shanghai Culture Square on February 27. Gu Haohao, chairperson of the Shanghai Dramatists Association and deputy director of the judging panel, noted that this edition has attracted more productions and performers than ever before, with a total enrollment of 88 theater productions and an astonishing 165 actors.

The Magnolia Stage Performance Award has been celebrating excellence in live theatrical performances since its inception in 1989. This annual event recognizes outstanding contributions to stage art by honoring exceptional productions and talented individuals across various categories.
honoring Contributions to Peking Opera
This year’s Special Contribution Award will be given to Li Bingshu, a distinguished artist known for his pivotal role in Peking opera. At age 83, he is recognized as a guardian of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in this customary performing art form. His remarkable career includes portraying iconic female characters inspired by Mei Lanfang’s legacy, such as roles from ‘The Legend of Madam White Snake.’
Spotlight on Leading Performers
The category for Best Leading Role features notable competitors like Maya Hakvoort, acclaimed Dutch musical actress recognized for her compelling performance as Lady Macbeth in ‘Lady M.’ This production debuted in Shanghai last May and was crafted by British playwrights James Beeny and Gina Georgio under Xu Jun’s direction. ‘Lady M’ holds significance as it marks China’s first English-language musical produced domestically while making its premiere at one of Shanghai’s cultural hubs.
