Severe Weather System to Bring Heavy Rains to Eastern India

On Saturday, July 20, the focus of ⁢the southwest ⁤monsoon’s intensity shifted eastward after a ⁢series of heavy downpours on the West coast‌ of India. A new depression developing in ⁢the Bay of Bengal is⁤ ready ‌to unleash‍ its power. Currently,⁤ this weather system‍ is swirling off the coasts of Odisha⁤ and north Andhra Pradesh, moving steadily west-northwestward over the past six hours.

As of the morning of July 20,⁤ the depression was situated near Chilika Lake, approximately 40 km south-southwest of ⁤Puri and 70⁢ km east-northeast of Gopalpur, ‍Odisha. This depression is‍ forecasted⁢ to continue its west-northwestward path, affecting Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the next 24 ‌hours before gradually ⁤losing strength.

The depression is expected to bring significant rainfall to various areas. East and Central India are likely⁣ to experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning for the next five days.

Furthermore, Telangana and ‌Vidarbha may face‌ isolated extremely heavy rainfall, while Coastal ⁢Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and⁤ Marathwada can⁣ anticipate very heavy rains on July 20. Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are projected to receive isolated ⁣heavy showers ⁢from July 20-24, with ‌Gangetic West⁢ Bengal and Jharkhand ‍experiencing ‍heavy rainfall⁢ on July 20 and 22.

In response to this weather system, the IMD ‌has issued a‍ red warning (indicating ‘take action’) for Telangana and Vidarbha on July 20, which will later be downgraded to ‌an orange alert (meaning ‘be⁣ prepared’) on July 21. Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh will ⁤continue to be under an orange alert on July 20, and Madhya⁤ Pradesh will be ⁢under the same alert ‌from July 20-24.

The depression ⁢is also expected ⁤to bring squally weather with wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph and gusts⁣ up to 65⁤ kmph‍ over the northwest and ⁢west-central⁤ Bay of Bengal. This will impact the coastal areas⁢ of North Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, and neighboring Bangladesh. Rough ⁢sea‌ conditions are anticipated, ‍prompting fishermen to avoid going out to sea.
