Listeria is a type of bacteria commonly found in soil, water, and‍ some animals. It can be present in raw⁤ and processed foods, leading to foodborne illnesses‌ in humans. While most⁢ healthy individuals may only experience mild symptoms such as fever and diarrhea, Listeria can ‍cause severe complications for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened ⁤immune systems.

How⁣ Does Listeria Spread through Deli ⁢Meats?

The recent outbreak of⁢ Listeria has been linked to deli meats such as sliced turkey, ham, chicken, and salami. These products are particularly susceptible ⁣to contamination during processing and packaging, ⁤making them a common source of foodborne illnesses.

New ⁢York Hit Hard ⁤with 7 Cases

New York has reported 7 confirmed cases‌ of Listeria infection linked to deli⁣ meats. This outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety measures and proper handling of deli products to prevent the‍ spread of harmful bacteria.

How‍ to Protect Yourself and Your Family

To reduce the ‌risk of Listeria infection from deli meats,‌ follow these practical tips:

  • If you are pregnant, elderly, or immunocompromised, consider avoiding ‌deli meats altogether.

A recent outbreak ‌of listeria linked to deli meats ⁢has affected a number of individuals ⁣in New York and other states. The⁣ Centers ⁣for Disease Control and ‍Prevention (CDC) is currently investigating this issue and has‌ identified 28 reported cases ⁢of illness as of July 19, ⁤2024.

Investigation and Cases

Among the reported cases, New York has seen the highest number of ‍infections, with at least seven people falling ill. In addition to New York, there have been reported illnesses in ‍12 states, with a total of ‌28 individuals being hospitalized. Tragically, two deaths have been reported in New Jersey‌ and⁢ Illinois, respectively.

Specifically, in New Jersey, cases have⁢ been reported in Monmouth⁢ and Passaic‌ Counties, while Connecticut has not reported any cases thus⁤ far. The onset of the first‌ case dates back to May 29, and the ⁢most recent illness related to the outbreak was reported on July‍ 5. The‍ affected individuals span a wide range of ⁤ages, from 32 to 94 years old.

Details‌ of the Outbreak

According to the CDC, interviews with 18 patients revealed that 16 of them had consumed deli meats purchased from deli counters, such as turkey, liverwurst, and ham. However, the outbreak has not been linked to any specific stores, brands, or products, and‍ no recalls have been issued in‍ connection with this ⁣issue. It is⁣ important to note‍ that there is no evidence ‌to suggest that prepackaged deli meats are causing illnesses.

Understanding Listeria

Listeria⁣ are bacteria ‍that can contaminate various types of foods, ⁢posing a risk to public health.‌ While ‍it is challenging to pinpoint the exact ⁢source of the bacteria, there are⁢ methods to eliminate it. Dr. Rami⁤ Nakeshbandi, ⁢chief⁣ medical officer and infectious disease specialist at SUNY Downstate Medical Center,‌ advises heating meat to a minimum temperature of 165 degrees or steaming it to effectively kill listeria.

The ⁢typical symptoms of listeriosis, the⁣ infection ‍caused by ⁢listeria, include fever, muscle aches, tiredness, headaches, stiff ‌neck, confusion, loss of balance,⁣ or seizures. Onset ‌of symptoms may occur shortly after consuming contaminated food or within two ⁣weeks post-consumption. While most individuals do⁢ not ⁢experience severe illness ⁣from listeria, ⁢it can be particularly dangerous for older adults,‌ individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.

As more information ⁣becomes available, it is crucial to stay informed about the outbreak and take necessary precautions ⁣to⁣ safeguard public health.
