Throughout the second half of the year, the association known ⁣as ”La José ⁢Martí” ⁤will host a series of conferences,⁤ forums, seminars, and other activities aimed at shedding light on and exploring the life, work, and lasting influence of Recabarren.

Acknowledged as the pioneer of the labor ⁤movement, ⁤Recabarren‍ was⁣ instrumental ⁤in establishing the initial workers’ unions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this ‍period, following ‍the aftermath of the Pacific‍ War, industrial capitalism flourished in Chile, particularly in ⁣mining, factories, and port‌ operations, ushering⁤ in a new era of economic and ‍labor dynamics.

The country witnessed a surge in inequalities and poverty, accompanied by a significant influx of rural residents into urban areas, ‌as well as governmental apathy towards the marginalized segments of society.

It was against ⁣this‍ backdrop‍ that Recabarren (July ⁢6, 1876⁢ – December 19, 1924), a skilled typographer, took on the mission of organizing ‍workers to advocate for their rights ‍and establish a press dedicated to labor issues.

Starting from 1901 in Iquique, located in the ⁢north of Chile, he played ‌a ⁢pivotal role in founding grassroots associations to foster the growth⁣ of labor unions and⁤ advocated‌ for women’s‍ empowerment.

In 1912, alongside fellow‍ leaders, he established the Socialist Workers’ Party, the first political entity ⁢exclusively devoted to championing the interests ⁤of the labor force. ⁣A decade later, this group evolved into the present-day Communist⁢ Party of Chile.

José Emilio Recabarren served as a member⁤ of parliament, led the ⁢Chilean Workers’ Federation⁢ from 1917 ⁣to ⁣1921, and represented ‌Chile as the⁤ sole ⁣delegate at⁢ the Congress of Trade Unions in Moscow at the end of 1922.

In May⁣ 1924, shortly before his passing, the‌ publication El Despertar de los Trabajadores ceased publication, to ⁤be succeeded by the newspaper La⁤ Justicia. ⁣These events reflect the enduring impact⁤ of Recabarren on the labor movement.
