Leetonia, Ohio to Host Tour and Luncheon for Vietnam Delegation
The Columbiana County Port Authority, together with several agencies, is set to welcome a delegation from Vietnam representing various industries interested in exporting to Ohio. The port authority’s upcoming visit was discussed at the regular board meeting held at the Global Investment Hub.
Penny Traina, the executive director of the port authority, and county Commissioner Mike Halleck embarked on a trade mission to Bangkok, Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in March 2019. Following this mission, Traina introduced Mousa Kassis, the director of the Ohio SBDC Export Assistance Network and Ohio Export Internship Program at Youngstown State University. Kassis remained in contact with the Ho Chi Minh City Chamber of Commerce who are now planning a trip to Texas after their talk with Kassis.
Kassis stated that their past visit to Vietnam is now yielding benefits as he managed to convince the chamber representatives from Ho Chi Minh City Chamber of Commerce not only to go Texas but also include visiting Youngstown area. He put together an incentive package for them which resulted in planning a trip to Ohio instead. Originally scheduled for October 1st arrival in 2024
In recent years trade between United States and Vietnam has seen significant growth reaching about $65 billion in 2019 up from $126 billion by 2023 while trade between U.S. and Ohio reached about $2 billion before rising up till $4.7 billion respectively.

Traina mentioned that members of this Vietnamese delegation represent various industries such as plastics food beverages health care/beauty natural rubber etc., contemplating exports into Ohio while importers from their end are eyeing construction/machinery wastewater treatment equipment food beverages plastics among others.
Looking back on her experience touring their country back in 2019 Traina said she never imagined they would come back & build global investment hub marketing moving there or hosting events like this within Columbiana County itself
