The recent collapse of a highway bridge between two tunnels in Sichuan province, China, due to a mudslide has caused three vehicles⁤ to plunge into mountainous terrain. As reported by Xinhua,‍ one passenger was rescued while five others remained missing. This incident marks‌ the ‌second bridge collapse in China within a month.

The mishap occurred at around⁣ 3:30 am on the Kangding-Luding section of the Yakang⁢ expressway. The Ministry of Emergency Management deployed approximately 300 rescuers to the site immediately after the event. Meanwhile, nearby Ridi village experienced a‍ mountain torrent and landslide that led to destruction, claiming at least two lives and leaving 12 individuals unaccounted for.

China has been experiencing increased instances of extreme weather, resulting in‍ heavy downpours leading‌ to floods, landslides,⁢ dyke breaches, and road collapses across the⁣ country. Just over two weeks prior to this incident, another highway bridge collapsed in Shangluo province due to sudden downpours and flash floods. The death toll from ‌that tragedy reached 38 people with 24 still missing.

In May this year, China faced its deadliest road collapse in over ⁣a decade when part of Meizhou-Dabu ‍highway ‌collapsed in Guangdong province resulting in 48 ‌fatalities. Following this disaster, President Xi Jinping urged local authorities to prioritize‍ saving lives and ensuring social stability while addressing potential risks promptly.

The ‍Yakang expressway was unveiled in 2018 connecting Yaan to Kangding, shortening travel time from ‌Chengdu ⁤to Kangding by two hours for an‍ overall journey time of four hours. The expressway ⁢predominantly ⁢consists of bridges and tunnels making up 82% of its infrastructure composition.

In response to these incidents, Chinese ‍citizens have called for enhanced monitoring systems for extreme weather events as well as raised concerns about infrastructure quality⁤ standards. “Tofu-dreg projects,” referring to poorly constructed infrastructure projects came ⁢into question following these⁤ incidents as ‌it did during the Wenchuan earthquake when poorly built school structures ‍led⁢ to tragic consequences.
