Celebrating African Heritage: The Africa in Reno Event
The Africa in Reno celebration, organized by the African Students’ Association (ASA) at the University of Nevada, Reno, serves as a remarkable occasion to unite individuals and honor the rich cultural heritage of Africa. The overarching objective is to spread awareness and appreciation for African traditions within the university sphere.
A Week-Long Cultural Extravaganza
In 2024, from September 16 to September 21, ASA coordinated an exciting series of five events aimed at fostering professional connections and cultural exchanges. These activities unfolded in various locations across campus, prominently in the Joe Crowley Student Union. Highlighted events included LinkedIn Headshots Day, Scavenger Hunt Day, Movie Night, Rep Your Country Day, and The Main Event. Attendees enjoyed vibrant traditional attire, savoring delicious African cuisine while participating in numerous engaging workshops and competitions.
“A central aim for me is to curate enjoyable and culturally enriching activities tailored for both our members and the broader university community,” shared Idia Uwaifo, executive board member and director of events within ASA. A Nigerian-American pursuing international business along with a Chinese minor at UNR, Uwaifo’s commitment shines through the planning process.
This year marked a significant milestone as it was only their second time hosting these celebrations yet witnessed an impressive surge in attendance. The enthusiasm among executive members focused on nurturing a sense of belonging among students interested in African culture or seeking connection with peers who share similar backgrounds. Participants echoed sentiments reflecting a newfound community spirit ignited by this event—a clear indicator that they wish for such occasions to be recurring fixtures on campus.
“The ASA is eager to carry forward this yearly gathering; so if you couldn’t make it this time around—don’t fret! We are excited about future editions!” Uwaifo remarked enthusiastically.
